How to know the difference between aging and premature aging

We all get older and so do our minds, bodies, and hearts

Do you ever feel like you’re aging faster than you should? Like you’re experiencing more aches, pains, and forgetfulness than expected at this stage of life? If so, you’re not alone, and what you may be experiencing is called premature aging.

Premature aging means showing signs of aging earlier than anticipated, and yes, it’s a real thing. While aging is a natural part of life, the process usually happens gradually over the years. For some, the signs of aging—like joint pain or memory lapses—might come sooner or later, but premature

aging refers to experiencing these changes at a noticeably faster rate than normal. So, how can you recognize it?

Signs You May Be Aging Prematurely:

More Sun Spots

Sunspots are common as you age, especially after 50. But if you’re noticing a surge of sunspots before then, it could be a sign of premature aging. Be sure to check with a doctor if your sunspots bleed, change shape, or turn black. To prevent them, use non-toxic sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection, cover up with clothing, and avoid peak sun hours (10 am–2 pm).

Memory Slips

It’s normal for memory to change slightly in your 40s, but conditions like dementia or Alzheimer’s typically don’t emerge until after 65. However, memory decline isn’t an inevitable part of aging. Keep your brain sharp by staying socially active, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet.

Aches and Joint Pains

Joint pain isn’t a given for everyone as they age, but the risk of osteoarthritis does increase with time, especially after 55 for women and 45 for men. While those aches won’t disappear, regular exercise—focusing on aerobics, strength training, and flexibility—can slow the progression. Even an hour of movement each week can make a difference!

Bruising Easily

As we age, our skin becomes thinner, and blood vessels more delicate, making bruising more common, especially after 60. If you’re bruising more easily after starting a new medication or noticing unusual bruises on your face, chest, or back, it’s worth talking to me or your doctor.

Slower Walking Pace

If you’re in your 40s and notice a slower walking pace, it might be a clue. Walking is one of the simplest exercises, and a decline in speed can be a sign of premature aging. To improve, gradually increase your daily walks, aiming for 30 minutes a day, and challenge yourself to hit 100 steps per minute.

Dry Skin

After 40, your skin naturally produces less oil, making it feel dry or dull. But other factors can contribute to this as well. Use gentle cleansers, moisturize regularly, and avoid hot water. Drink

plenty of water and protect your skin from dry environments like the desert. If dryness persists, it may be time to consult a dermatologist or your doctor.
