Natural Ways To Handle Heartburn

Heartburn is also known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). For some, it can be a minor burning that happens occasionally after dinner. For others, itโ€™s a bit worse. It can actually start to damage your esophagus.

It can?

Yes. This can happen when you have chronic heartburn. In extreme cases, chronic heartburn or GERD can lead to Barrettโ€™s Esophagus. This is a condition that involves your cells changing.

Basically, the constant acidic environment in the esophagus can lead to those cells adapting to be like the cells in your stomach. During this process, the cells are at risk of turning cancerous. We hate that! This is only when the heartburn is chronic (aka constant).

With that said, we donโ€™t want it to get that far. What can we do about it?

We can pay attention to what we eat! If you experience heartburn regularly, it would be a good idea to keep a food diary. With a food diary, you can identify what foods may increase or decrease your symptoms.

In addition to this, itโ€™d be best to avoid a variety of foods that make heartburn worse. What are these foods? Letโ€™s check it out.

Foods that exacerbate heartburn:

  1. Chocolate

We know. We know. This is a hard one, but letโ€™s just save chocolate for special occasions.

  1. Refined carbohydrates

What are these? White bread, pasta, pastries, white rice, and cereal are all good examples of carbs that lack nutrients and fiber. Avoid eating these on the regular.

  1. Alcohol

This is bad for your body for many reasons. Heartburn is just one of them.

  1. Sugar and soda

Do your best to read labels so you can avoid eating sugar unknowingly. Itโ€™s hidden in many products.

  1. Peppermint

We really love peppermint. It provides some nice benefits, but itโ€™s not great for heartburn. Why not? Peppermint can relax the body which means it can relax specific parts like the sphincter, the muscle between the stomach and esophagus. When the sphincter relaxes, the acid from your stomach can come up through the esophagus. We donโ€™t want that! So be careful with peppermint.

  1. Caffeine

Why should we avoid it? Because drinks and food with caffeine can increase the amount of acid your stomach releases. This would make your heartburn worse.

Itโ€™s important to stop eating foods that can worsen your symptoms.

Now that you know, do your best to avoid them. With that said, each person is different. Some other foods can impact your body negatively. If that happens, write it down and go over it with a trusted physician.
